Antiextremism refers to the range of policies, programs, and discourses designed to prevent, counter, and mitigate the appeal, recruitment, and violence of extremist ideologies and groups. The goal is to reduce the conditions that allow extremism to take root, including propagandistic messaging, illicit financing, and networks that spread violence. Antiextremism operates at local, national, and international levels and across online and offline spaces, addressing political, religious, ethnic, or other ideologies.

Strategies include education, community resilience, and media literacy to build critical thinking; early intervention with at-risk individuals; disengagement and deradicalization programs; counter-messaging that promotes inclusive narratives; and digital platform policies, content moderation, and research to understand trends. Law enforcement and intelligence may be involved in proportionate, rights-respecting ways when violence or crime is present.

Principles emphasize human rights, rule of law, proportionality, and civil liberties, with attention to avoiding stigmatization or censorship. Effectiveness is difficult to measure, and programs can face criticism for potential overreach, bias, or harm to legitimate discourse. Online platforms, communities, and governments continually adapt strategies to reflect evolving threats and technologies.

In policy and scholarly debates, antiextremism is closely linked to counter-extremism and deradicalization efforts and is often framed as prevention, rehabilitation, and reintegration. Examples exist in many countries, including government strategies and civil society campaigns that seek to reduce vulnerability to extremist propaganda while preserving pluralism and fundamental rights.
