Anticavity refers to agents or methods that prevent or inhibit the formation of dental caries, commonly known as cavities. The primary mechanism by which anticavity agents work is by strengthening tooth enamel, making it more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria in the mouth.

Fluoride is the most widely recognized and effective anticavity agent. When fluoride is incorporated into the tooth structure, it forms fluorapatite, which is more acid-resistant than the natural hydroxyapatite of enamel. Fluoride also has a remineralizing effect, meaning it can help repair early stages of enamel demineralization. This can be achieved through various sources, including fluoridated toothpaste, mouth rinses, and professionally applied treatments. Water fluoridation is a public health measure that adds fluoride to community water supplies to reduce the incidence of tooth decay.

Other substances can also contribute to anticavity effects, though generally to a lesser extent than fluoride. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol, is sometimes found in chewing gum and candies. It is thought to inhibit the growth of certain oral bacteria that produce acids responsible for tooth decay. Chewing sugar-free gum, in general, can also be beneficial by stimulating saliva production, which helps to neutralize acids and wash away food particles. Maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as regular brushing and flossing, is crucial for removing plaque and food debris, thereby reducing the bacteria that cause cavities. A balanced diet low in sugars and frequent snacking also plays a significant role in preventing tooth decay.
