Ameliorating is the act or process of making something that is bad or undesirable better. As a verb form of ameliorate, it denotes improvement or mitigation rather than mere relief. The term comes from Old French ameliorer, from Latin melior "better." In English, it has been used since the early modern period to describe efforts, policies, or interventions that upgrade conditions or reduce harm.

In policy and social contexts, ameliorating actions aim to raise living standards, reduce inequities, or address systemic problems, such as poverty, housing, or health disparities. In medicine, amelioration refers to the lessening of symptoms or disease burden, and to treatments that improve a patient’s condition. In law, ameliorating circumstances are factors that can temper culpability or severity in sentencing, while in environmental science, ameliorating measures seek to lessen ecological harm or climate effects.

Ameliorating differs from related terms. Alleviate also means to lessen burden or pain but is often used for relief that is temporary or singular; mitigate focuses on reducing potential harms or risks, sometimes in anticipation. Amelioration can imply broader, longer-term improvement of a system or condition, whereas improving may be used in more general contexts. The word also appears as an attributive noun, such as ameliorating measures, factors, or conditions.

Examples include policies aimed at ameliorating poverty through subsidies, training, and housing reform; and medical practice that ameliorates chronic pain with appropriate analgesia and supportive care. In law, courts consider ameliorating circumstances such as remorse or rehabilitation when determining sentences.
