It serves as a foundation, providing a stable and level surface for the installation of carpets, hardwood, tile, or other decorative floor coverings. The type of subfloor used can vary depending on the construction method and the intended final flooring.

Common materials for subflooring include plywood and oriented strand board (OSB). Plywood is made from thin layers of wood veneer glued together, offering good strength and stability. OSB is constructed from wood strands compressed and bonded with adhesives, providing a cost-effective and strong alternative. In some older homes, concrete slabs can also serve as a subfloor, especially in basements or ground-level constructions.

The primary functions of a subfloor are to distribute the load from occupants and furniture across the joists or foundation, to provide a nailing or adhesive surface for the finished flooring, and to help dampen sound transmission between floors. Proper installation of the subfloor is crucial for the longevity and performance of the final floor.
