This signal instructs subsequent stages not to apply further compression. Some systems also rely on automatic detection: if a file appears to be in a known compressed format (for example ZIP, GZIP, JPEG, PNG, MP3), the compressor will skip it even without an explicit flag.

Detection methods vary. Metadata flags offer a clear indication, while content-based checks use magic numbers or file signatures to identify already compressed data. File extensions can be suggestive but are not reliable on their own, so many implementations combine extension hints with signature checks and, occasionally, compression ratio observations to decide whether re‑compression is worthwhile.

Implications include performance gains and reduced CPU usage, as well as the risk of missed opportunities for small improvements in rare cases. Mislabeling data as already compressed can prevent beneficial compression and may complicate compatibility with tools that assume a standard compression state. Conversely, attempting to re‑compress genuinely compressed data often yields little to no size reduction and can increase file size due to encoding overhead.
