Alocasia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae, native to tropical regions of Asia and eastern Australia. Plants are commonly known as elephant's ear for their large, decorative leaves. The genus is related to Colocasia but differs in leaf shape, venation, and inflorescence characteristics.

Description: Alocasia species are rhizomatous perennials with large, glossy leaves that are often arrow- or shield-shaped. Leaves have prominent veins and can display green, bronze, or metallic hues. Flowers are spadix with a spathe, but flowering is rare in cultivation.

Distribution and habitat: Native to tropical forests and understory environments. In cultivation they prefer warm temperatures, bright indirect light, high humidity, and consistently moist, well-draining soil.

Care: In home culture they require a large pot and regular watering without waterlogging. Avoid cold drafts; maintain temperatures above 16°C (60°F). Provide humidity and a light, rich potting mix; fertilize sparingly during the growing season.

Propagation and varieties: Propagation is typically by division of rhizomes or offsets. Notable cultivars include hybrids marketed as Alocasia x amazonica ('Polly') and several variegated forms.

Pests, diseases, and toxicity: Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Root rot can result from overwatering. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals; handling may irritate skin and eyes; keep away from pets and children.

Uses: Alocasia is widely grown as an ornamental plant for interiors and tropical gardens, valued for bold foliage and architectural form.
