allphotonic

Allphotonic is a term used in photonics and information technology to describe systems, architectures, or research programs that aim to perform information generation, processing, and transmission entirely with photons, minimizing or eliminating electronic signal processing in the data path.

Technologies associated with allphotonic approaches include photonic integrated circuits (PICs), silicon photonics, and other on-chip platforms that integrate light sources, modulators, detectors, and waveguides. In an allphotonic design, data routing, signal processing, and interconnects are implemented with optical components, while electronic control circuitry may remain only for system management or interfacing.

Applications include high-bandwidth data-center interconnects, optical networking, high-performance computing, photonic signal processing, sensors, and emerging quantum information systems. Allphotonic concepts aim to deliver advantages in bandwidth, latency, and energy efficiency by replacing or reducing electronic signal conversions.

Challenges include integrating light sources with photonic chips, managing heat and losses, achieving scalable manufacturing, standardization, and packaging constraints. While significant progress has been made, most practical systems today use hybrid photonic-electronic architectures, with fully allphotonic processors or networks still largely in research and demonstration stages.
