Alkamisen is a traditional Japanese sword, also known as a wakizashi, which is a shorter companion sword to the longer katana. The term "alkamisen" specifically refers to a type of wakizashi that is worn on the left side of the body, typically by women. This practice is rooted in historical and cultural traditions, where the wakizashi was carried for self-defense and as a symbol of status.

The alkamisen is characterized by its shorter blade, usually around 20-30 centimeters in length, compared to the katana's 60-70 centimeters. It is often made of high-quality steel and features a distinctive, slightly curved blade. The handle, or tsuka, is typically wrapped in a decorative cloth or leather, and the sword is often adorned with intricate engravings or inlays.

The tradition of carrying the alkamisen on the left side of the body is believed to have originated from the Heian period (794-1185).
