An allergist is a medical doctor who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies and asthma. They are also known as an allergist-immunologist. Allergists undergo additional training beyond general medical school and residency to become experts in the immune system and how it reacts to allergens.

Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that are typically harmless to most people, such as pollen, dust mites, certain foods, or insect venom. This can include avoidance strategies, medications such as antihistamines and corticosteroids, and immunotherapy, also known as allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy (under the tongue drops). Immunotherapy works by gradually exposing the patient to increasing amounts of an allergen, helping to desensitize the immune system over time.

Allergists also treat other conditions related to the immune system, such as immunodeficiencies and certain autoimmune disorders. Their expertise is crucial for managing chronic allergic conditions and improving the quality of life for patients suffering from allergic diseases.
