An aldorman, from the Old English ealdorman, was a senior royal official and noble in Anglo-Saxon England. The position combined political, judicial, and military authority, typically overseeing a large territorial unit such as a shire on behalf of the king. Aldormen were among the king’s closest officers and often acted as a bridge between royal authority and local communities.

Etymology and role: The term ealdorman means “elder man” or “senior man.” The office was held by chief nobles who presided over shire courts, advised the king, and commanded troops raised within their jurisdiction.
