Al-Andalus was the medieval Muslim-ruled territory and cultural state that encompassed most of the Iberian Peninsula and what is now Portugal and Spain. The name is an Arabic term, and its exact meaning is debated, but it is commonly associated with the Vandals, a Germanic tribe who briefly ruled parts of the Iberian Peninsula. Al-Andalus existed for nearly 800 years, from the Umayyad conquest in 711 AD until the fall of the Emirate of Granada in 1492 AD.
