The phrase is descriptive rather than a formal label and covers a wide geographic area and long span of history, from the early Islamic conquests in the 7th century to later empires that governed diverse populations.

Key examples span several eras and regions. Early on, the Rashidun, Umayyad, and Abbasid caliphates established Muslim rule across the Middle East and parts of North Africa and beyond. In Iberia, Al-Andalus represented centuries of Muslim rule under successive dynasties. The Fatimids in North Africa and the Seljuks in Anatolia and the Levant illustrate how Muslim authority diversified after the initial caliphates. In later periods, the Ottoman Empire dominated parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa; in South Asia, the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughal Empire were prominent Muslim-ruled polities.
