A sultanate is a form of monarchy headed by a sultan, a ruler whose title derives from the Arabic sultan, meaning authority or power. In Islamic political culture, sultans ruled states of varying size and claimed sovereignty over territory and subjects, with authority often extending over secular governance and religious ritual.

Historically, sultanates arose in the medieval Islamic world as successors or alternatives to caliphates and emirates. The title was used by rulers in parts of the Middle East, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Notable examples include the Seljuk and Ottoman sultanates, the Delhi Sultanate, the Mamluk sultanate, and various Malay, Bruneian, and East African polities. The sultan's authority ranged from hereditary rule to elective arrangements within noble elites.

Administration typically combined military leadership with fiscal, judicial, and ceremonial duties. In many cases, the sultanate was distinct from a caliphate, which claimed broader religious leadership; sultans often sought legitimacy through dynastic prestige, conquest, or ties with Islamic scholars. Succession practices varied and could provoke internal conflict.

In the modern era, several sultanates persist as sovereign states or autonomous regions. Some maintain ceremonial or constitutional powers while others function as absolute monarchies. Examples include the Sultanate of Oman and the Sultanate of Brunei, which retain centralized authority, and various Southeast Asian states where sultanates operate within broader constitutional frameworks.
