Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is a common thermoplastic polymer composed of three monomers: acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. In typical impact-modified grades, acrylonitrile provides chemical resistance and heat stability, styrene contributes rigidity and a glossy surface, and butadiene adds toughness. The exact composition varies, but common ranges are roughly 15–35% acrylonitrile, 5–30% butadiene, and 40–60% styrene. ABS can be produced as graft or random copolymers and is often manufactured as an impact-modified material with dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles in a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix.

Properties of ABS include good processability by injection molding and extrusion, high impact resistance, moderate rigidity, and good dimensional stability. It has a relatively high toughness at low temperatures, a glass transition temperature around 100°C, and decent gloss and surface finish. ABS offers good electrical insulation and chemical resistance to many acids and bases, but it is less resistant to certain solvents and chlorinated hydrocarbons. It can be easily colored and machined, painted, or solvent-bonded.

Applications of ABS are widespread and include consumer electronics housings, automotive interior and exterior components, protective casings, toys (notably LEGO bricks), and various consumer appliances. It is commonly recycled through mechanical recycling streams, where scrap is re-melted and reprocessed as pellets, though blends with other polymers can complicate recycling. During processing, exposure to styrene monomer should be controlled to minimize potential health risks. Overall, ABS remains valued for its balance of toughness, processability, and cosmetic qualities.
