aikavakioon

Aikavakioon is the Finnish term for “time constant” in physics and engineering, used to describe the characteristic time over which a physical quantity changes by a specific fraction of its final value. The word is a compound of aika, meaning “time,” and vakio, meaning “constant.” In the dative or illative case it is used to refer to the application or movement toward this constant in a process.

In electrical circuits aikavakioon appears in the analysis of RC and RL networks. The formula τ = R C for a resistor–capacitor circuit, and τ = L/R for a resistor–inductor circuit, give the time constant in seconds. When a step voltage is applied, the capacitor voltage rises asymptotically and reaches 63.2 % of the final voltage after one aikavakioon. Likewise, during discharge it falls to 36.8 % of its initial value after one aikavakioon.

The concept is also used in mechanical damping, chemical reactions, and any system that can be modeled by a first‑order linear differential equation. The term can be found in Finnish textbooks and technical literature under both the Finnish name and the English equivalent. Because the underlying mathematics is universal, aikavakioon is recognized by engineers and scientists who work with time‑dependent phenomena. The concept provides a simple, single‑parameter characterization of how quickly a system responds to changes in its environment, making it a valuable tool for design, analysis, and troubleshooting across a range of disciplines.
