Afectives is a broad term used in psychology and related disciplines to refer to the emotional dimension of experience, including affect, emotions, moods, and related evaluative states. It encompasses how feelings arise, persist, and influence thought and behavior, and it is often studied separately from cognitive processes in order to understand how emotions shape perception, decision making, and social interaction.

The study of afectives covers theoretical models that describe how emotional states are organized and generated. Dimensional approaches typically describe affect along core dimensions such as valence (pleasant versus unpleasant) and arousal (activation level). Other theories emphasize discrete emotions, such as happiness, fear, anger, and sadness, as distinct, recognizable states. Affective experiences are influenced by appraisal of events, context, individual differences, and cultural norms. In affective neuroscience, researchers examine neural circuits and neurochemical systems that underlie emotional processing, including the limbic system and prefrontal regions, as well as neurotransmitters that modulate affect.

Applications of affective knowledge span multiple fields. In clinical psychology and psychiatry, afectives relate to mood and anxiety disorders, emotion regulation, and psychotherapy outcomes. In education, work, and design, understanding affect helps tailor interventions, improve user experience, and support social communication. Affective computing is a developing area that aims to create systems capable of recognizing, interpreting, and sometimes responding to human emotions to improve interaction and responsiveness.

Measurement of afectives relies on self-report scales, behavioral observation, and physiological indicators, each with strengths and limitations. Common tools include mood and affect inventories, physiological measures such as heart rate or skin conductance, and, increasingly, multimodal data fusion. Cross-cultural variability and individual baselines pose ongoing challenges to assessment and interpretation.
