Adjectifische is a linguistic term used in some grammars to denote the adjectival category of words that modify nouns and express properties or attributes. The label is encountered especially in Germanic- and Slavic-language traditions and is used to describe both adjectives proper and certain participial or participial-derived modifiers that function like adjectives in syntax and semantics. In this view, adjectifische items typically behave as modifiers of nouns and can also appear in predicative position after a linking verb.

Morphology and agreement vary across languages. In languages with rich adjective inflection, adjectifische forms may agree with the noun in gender, number, and case, and they often participate in declension patterns. In languages with little or no agreement, adjectives remain invariable or show limited inflection. Semantically, adjectifische express properties, qualities, or relative attributes such as size, color, or opinion.

Syntactically, adjectifische can occupy attributive positions before a noun (the red ball) and can also appear predicatively (the ball is red). They may combine with determiners and degree modifiers and can participate in comparison, in some languages with explicit comparative and superlative forms.

Cross-linguistic variation is common: English adjectives generally do not inflect for number or gender, German adjectives decline, and other languages show different orders and clitic or clausal integrations. Etymology traces the term to the Latin adjectivus via various European equivalents for “adjective.”
