Actante is a term used in linguistics and narratology to describe a participant in a narrative action or clause. It emphasizes the functional role of a participant in the action, rather than its syntactic position. Actantes, or actants, are identified by how they contribute to the meaning of the event, such as who initiates, who benefits, who is aimed at, who helps, and who opposes.

The concept is closely associated with structuralist narratology and the actantial model developed by the semiotician Algirdas Julien Greimas. In this model, a narrative action is analyzed through six actants: sender (the initiator), receiver (the beneficiary), subject (the main protagonist), object (what is sought or affected), helper (one who assists the subject), and opponent (one who blocks the action). The framework helps researchers examine how different stories organize and repeat similar underlying logic across cultures and genres.

Actantes are used to analyze a wide range of texts, including myths, fairy tales, novels, and films. They offer a way to map relationships and motivations beyond traditional grammatical roles, highlighting how characters and elements function within the storyline. In Romance languages such as Spanish and Portuguese, actante is commonly used as the direct equivalent of actant.

Example: in a tale where a hero retrieves a stolen artifact to restore order, the subject is the hero, the object is the artifact, the sender might be a divine command or societal expectation, the receiver is the realm or people benefited, the helper is a mentor or magical aide, and the opponent is the thief or antagonist. The specific assignments can vary with the analytical focus.
