Acrostichoides is a small genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Rosaceae, specifically within the subfamily Maloideae. The genus is closely related to the more well-known genus *Malus*, which includes apples and crabapples. Acrostichoides currently contains only two recognized species: *Acrostichoides lutea* and *Acrostichoides arbutifolia*, both native to North America.

*Acrostichoides lutea*, commonly known as the **yellow dogwood** or **yellowwood**, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows up to 10 meters tall. It is characterized by its bright yellow flowers, which bloom in early spring before the leaves appear. The leaves are simple, alternate, and oval-shaped, turning a vibrant red in autumn. This species is found in the southeastern United States, particularly in moist, shaded forests.

*Acrostichoides arbutifolia*, or **strawberry-bush**, is a smaller shrub, typically reaching heights of 1 to 3 meters. It produces clusters of small, white flowers in late spring, followed by red berry-like fruits that resemble strawberries. The leaves are similar to those of the American sweetgum (*Liquidambar styraciflua*), with a lobed shape and a smooth texture. This species is native to the eastern and central United States, thriving in well-drained soils and partial shade.

Both species are valued for their ornamental qualities, particularly their attractive foliage and flowers. They are occasionally cultivated in gardens and landscapes, though they are not as widely grown as other ornamental shrubs. Acrostichoides plants are generally low-maintenance and adaptable, making them suitable for various garden settings. They also provide ecological benefits, serving as food sources for wildlife and contributing to forest understory diversity.
