Abjuration is the act of formally renouncing or rejecting a belief, cause, or allegiance, or the declaration itself. The word comes from the Latin abjurare, meaning to swear away or renounce (ab- away + jurare to swear).

In secular and legal contexts, abjuration often takes the form of a solemn, public declaration or oath renunciation. It can accompany changes of faith, political allegiance, citizenship, or other commitments, and may carry social or legal consequences depending on the jurisdiction and circumstances. In religious contexts, abjuration refers to the formal renunciation of a faith or doctrinal position, sometimes under pressure or as part of a conversion process. The term is frequently used to describe careful, ceremonial renunciations rather than informal disavowals.

Historically, abjuration has figured in conflicts over confessional authority, citizenship, and allegiance. Rulers, governments, or religious authorities have sometimes required individuals to perform an abjuration of former loyalties as a prerequisite for protection, legal status, or acceptance within a community. Because it emphasizes a formal, unequivocal renunciation, abjuration has commonly appeared in official records and declarations rather than everyday dissent.

In fantasy literature and role-playing games, abjuration is also the name of a school or discipline of magic. It typically encompasses protective wards, counterspells, and techniques that negate or neutralize other magical effects, serving a defensive or disabling function rather than offensive spellcraft.
