Zohr

Zohr is a large natural gas field in the Mediterranean Sea offshore Egypt. It lies in the offshore Shorouk block within the Egyptian exclusive economic zone, at water depths around 1,500 meters.

The field was discovered in August 2015 by the Italian energy company Eni. It is estimated to contain about 30 trillion cubic feet (approximately 850 billion cubic meters) of gas in place, making it one of the largest gas discoveries in the Mediterranean.

Development was pursued as a fast-track project, using offshore platforms and a subsea pipeline system to connect to Egypt's national gas grid. First gas was produced in December 2017, and output was expanded rapidly through 2018–2019.

Zohr significantly boosted Egypt's natural gas production and aided the country in achieving self-sufficiency in natural gas, reducing imports and enabling export opportunities. It also contributed to regional energy dynamics in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Operator and ownership: The project is led by Eni as operator, with involvement from Egyptian state entities and international partners in the Shorouk concession.
