Zierprofilen

Zierprofilen, or decorative mouldings, are ornamental profiles used to embellish edges, frames and surfaces in carpentry, architecture and furniture making. They are produced as continuous moulding profiles or assembled from standard shapes and can be applied to doors, windows, dado rails, picture frames, cornices and furniture. They serve to create visual rhythm, conceal joints and steps, and reflect stylistic traditions from classical to modern.

Manufacturing and materials: Zierprofilen can be milled from wood using shapers, routers or planers; on a larger scale they are extruded or cast in plastics, metal or plaster. Common profile families include convex forms such as ovolo and torus, concave forms such as cavetto, as well as mixed forms like beads, ogee and astragal. Profiles are chosen to harmonize with surrounding components and to maintain consistent thickness and depth.

Materials and finishes: wood (softwood or hardwood), plaster for interior decorative work, and metals such as brass or aluminum, as well as synthetic polymers. Finishes range from varnish, stain and paint to gilding or leaf for metallic or historic effects.

Applications: interior architecture (door and window casings, architraves, cornices, friezes), furniture (table edges, mirror frames, bed rails) and restoration or replication of historic rooms.

Installation and maintenance: ensure compatible thickness and precise mitres where required; fix with adhesive and/or mechanical fasteners; protect with appropriate sealants and finishes. Clean with mild detergents and reapply finishes as needed to maintain appearance.
