Zeroforcing

Zeroforcing is a technique used in computer science, particularly in the context of error correction codes and signal processing. It is a method to equalize a channel or a system that has introduced distortion, aiming to restore the original signal. The core idea is to design a filter that, when applied to the distorted signal, effectively cancels out the channel's effects.

In digital communications, channels can distort signals due to various factors like multipath propagation, which causes a signal to arrive at the receiver via multiple paths of different lengths, leading to inter-symbol interference (ISI). Zeroforcing attempts to mitigate ISI by applying a linear equalizer. This equalizer is designed such that the combined response of the channel and the equalizer has zeros at specific points, typically at the sampling instants of the transmitted symbols, except for the desired symbol.

The design of a zeroforcing equalizer involves determining the coefficients of the equalizer filter. These coefficients are usually calculated based on the known or estimated characteristics of the channel. While effective in theory, zeroforcing equalizers can amplify noise in the signal, especially if the channel has deep nulls or poles. This noise amplification can sometimes degrade the performance more than the original ISI.

An alternative to zeroforcing is decision feedback equalization (DFE), which uses past decisions to cancel out residual ISI. Zeroforcing is a simpler approach and is often used when noise amplification is not a critical concern or as a baseline for comparison. It remains a fundamental concept in the study of equalization techniques.
