Zahnrand

Zahnrand is a German term used in dentistry to denote the margin or edge of a tooth. It can refer to the anatomical border where the crown ends and the root begins, often near the gingival margin where the tooth meets the soft tissue, as well as to the gingival margin itself. In everyday clinical speech, Zahnrand may describe the visible edge of the enamel on a tooth or the border around a restoration.

Two main senses are typically described. Anatomical margin: the peripheral boundary of the tooth crown, including the cervical region where enamel, dentin, and cementum converge. The precise position is clinically relevant for bonding of restorations and for the diagnosis of wear, chipping, or erosion. Restorative margin: the edge created by dental restorations such as fillings, crowns, inlays, or veneers that contacts the tooth or gums. Proper management of Zahnrand margins is essential to prevent marginal leakage, plaque accumulation, and recurrent caries.

Clinical relevance: Assessments of Zahnrand integrity are routine in examinations and radiographs. Changes in the Zahnrand can indicate periodontal recession, abrasion, or improper fit of restorations and can affect prognosis and comfort.

In German-speaking dentistry, Zahnrand is a generic term that may be translated as “tooth margin” or “edge of the tooth.” For precise anatomical reference, other terms such as the cervical line or marginal areas of specific teeth may be used.
