Ylioppilaskypärä

Ylioppilaskypärä, often translated as "matriculation helmet" or "student cap," is a symbolic headwear worn by Finnish students who have passed the matriculation examination. This examination, known as the ylioppilastutkinto, is a national standardized test taken at the end of upper secondary education (lukio). Successfully passing the matriculation examination grants students the title of ylioppilas, equivalent to a high school graduate with university entrance qualifications.

The ylioppilaskypärä is typically a black, cylindrical cap with a colored band around the base. The color of the band signifies the student's chosen academic specialization or the type of matriculation examination they passed. For instance, a white band traditionally indicates a student who passed the general matriculation examination, while other colors might denote specific subjects or vocational pathways. The cap is adorned with a lyre emblem, a symbol of academic achievement and often associated with the arts and humanities.
