Yksityisyydensäännökset, often translated as privacy regulations or data protection rules, refer to a set of laws and guidelines that govern how personal information is collected, processed, stored, and shared. These regulations are designed to protect individuals' fundamental right to privacy in an increasingly digital world. The most prominent example globally is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union, which sets a high standard for data protection and grants individuals significant control over their personal data.

Key principles often found within privacy regulations include transparency, purpose limitation, data minimization, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity and confidentiality, and accountability. Transparency requires organizations to inform individuals about how their data is being used. Purpose limitation ensures data is collected for specified, explicit, and legitimate purposes and not further processed in a manner incompatible with those purposes. Data minimization means only collecting data that is adequate, relevant, and limited to what is necessary for the intended purposes.

These regulations typically grant individuals certain rights, such as the right to access their data, the right to rectification of inaccurate data, the right to erasure (or "right to be forgotten"), and the right to restrict processing. They also impose obligations on organizations, including the need to obtain consent for data processing, implement appropriate security measures, and notify authorities and individuals in case of data breaches. Non-compliance with these rules can result in substantial fines and reputational damage. Privacy regulations are continually evolving to address new technologies and emerging privacy challenges.
