Yksikäyttäjätila, often translated as single-user mode, is a special operating system mode that allows only one user to access the system at a time. This mode is typically used for system maintenance and repair tasks. In single-user mode, many of the operating system's services and non-essential processes are not started, which can free up system resources and prevent potential conflicts during troubleshooting.

When a computer boots into single-user mode, it usually presents a command-line interface rather than the graphical user interface that is common in multi-user environments. This command-line access provides direct control over the system, making it easier for administrators to perform tasks such as file system checks, disk repairs, software installations, or system configuration changes. Because only one user is active, there is less risk of accidental data corruption or interference from other running applications.

Accessing single-user mode often requires specific actions during the boot process, such as holding down a particular key or entering a command in a bootloader menu. The exact procedure can vary depending on the operating system, such as Linux, macOS, or older versions of Windows. Once in single-user mode, users can execute system commands to diagnose and fix issues. After completing the necessary maintenance, the system can be rebooted into normal multi-user mode.
