Yearandletter is a naming convention that encodes two pieces of information in a compact identifier: the calendar year of release or production, and a trailing letter that signals version, revision, or variant. The year anchors the item in time, while the letter provides a simple sequence to distinguish incremental changes within that period. Common practice assigns letters starting with A for the initial release, then B, C, and so on; some systems reset the alphabet with each new year, while others use the same-letter scheme across years.

Usage and domains: Industries that employ this scheme include software distribution, hardware product lines, publishing of editions or print runs, and archival cataloging. In software, year-and-letter identifiers may appear on build labels, package names, or changelogs to indicate minor updates without full version numbers. In publishing, first edition might be "2021 A" and subsequent printings "2021 B", etc. In hardware, a model might be tagged "2024 D" to distinguish a mid-cycle revision from the original 2024 A model. It is also used in logistics and procurement to simplify tracking when formal version control systems are unnecessary or unavailable.
