Yardbased is a term used to describe a design and management approach that treats the yard of a residence as a multifunctional space for food production, energy efficiency, water management, and recreation. It emphasizes integrating vegetation, infrastructure, and human activity within the outdoor area surrounding a dwelling.

Key components commonly associated with yardbased include edible landscaping (fruit trees, berries, vegetables), pollinator-friendly plantings, rainwater harvesting and irrigation systems, composting and soil rehabilitation, permeable surfaces to reduce runoff, and the use of renewable energy features such as solar-powered lighting or microgrids.

Implementation practices include planning for perennial crops and soil health, modular or raised beds for accessibility, vertical gardening and trellises to maximize space, incorporation of shade and seating areas, and water-wise watering schedules. These elements are often combined to create a yard that can produce food, support biodiversity, manage stormwater, and provide outdoor living spaces.
