Wollstoffe

Wollstoffe, also known as wool fabrics, are textiles made from the fibers of sheep and other animals like goats, alpacas, and camels. Wool is a natural protein fiber, prized for its warmth, durability, and elasticity. The processing of wool involves shearing the animal, cleaning the wool, and then spinning it into yarn. This yarn is then woven or knitted to create a wide variety of fabrics.

The characteristics of wool fabrics vary depending on the type of wool used and the weaving or knitting technique. Fine wools, such as merino, produce soft and lightweight fabrics, suitable for finer garments. Coarser wools are used for more robust textiles like blankets and outerwear. Wool is naturally water-repellent due to the lanolin content, and it can absorb a significant amount of moisture without feeling damp. Its crimped structure allows wool fabrics to trap air, providing excellent insulation.

Common types of wool fabrics include tweed, flannel, worsted wool, and felt. Tweed is known for its rough, loosely woven texture and often features a mottled appearance. Flannel is a soft, napped fabric that can be made from wool and is often used for shirts and pajamas. Worsted wool is spun from long-staple wool fibers, resulting in a smooth, strong, and durable fabric. Felt is a non-woven fabric made by matting, condensing, and pressing wool fibers together. Wollstoffe are widely used in clothing, upholstery, carpets, and other home furnishings.
