Windowsympäristö refers to the software environment provided by the Windows operating system that enables applications to run and users to interact with the computer. It includes the kernel and core services, the runtime libraries, the user interface, and the storage of configuration data that together form the Windows experience.

Key components are the Windows kernel and system services, the Win32 API and modern app platforms such as .NET, Windows Runtime (WinRT), and COM. The user interface is delivered by the Windows shell and File Explorer, with input and rendering through DirectX and other subsystems. The on-disk configuration is managed by the Registry, and data is stored in file systems such as NTFS or ReFS. Windows also provides the Windows Subsystem for Linux, enabling Linux binaries to run within a Windows environment.

The Windows environment supports multiple deployment scenarios, including desktop, server, and embedded variants, as well as cross-architecture support with x86, x64, and ARM64, including emulation via WOW64.
