Windbrekers

Windbrekers, or windbreaks, are barriers designed to reduce wind speed over fields, farms, or open spaces. They can be living structures such as rows of trees, shrubs, or hedges, or non-living barriers such as fences, walls, or earth berms. Their goal is to create a sheltered microclimate.

Functions include reducing soil erosion, conserving soil moisture, and protecting crops and seedlings from wind damage. Windbreaks can also lessen frost exposure, lower dust and debris, and improve crop quality and yields in exposed locations. They may also moderate wind-related heating or cooling effects for nearby sites.

Design principles aim to balance shelter with airflow. Important factors are height, density, porosity, and spacing of multiple rows. A typical multi-row windbreak has increasing height toward the windward side, with a porosity roughly 40–60% to allow some wind passage and avoid stagnation.

Types and materials include living windbreaks (evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, or hedges) and non-living barriers (fences, walls, or earth embankments). Hybrid designs combine vegetation with structural elements. Species selection depends on climate, soil, and maintenance capability.

Applications are common in temperate and arid regions, especially in agriculture and horticulture. They are used to protect crops in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia, and can be integrated into landscape planning to reduce wind impacts on buildings and open spaces.

Management considerations include initial establishment cost, ongoing maintenance, pruning, pest control, and potential shading or root competition. Effectiveness varies with wind direction and season, requiring site-specific design and monitoring to maximize benefits.
