Wielkopolskas

Wielkopolskas are a breed of domestic pig originating from the Greater Poland region of Poland. They are known for their robust build, good fertility, and lean meat. The breed was developed in the mid-20th century through crossbreeding of native Polish pigs with breeds such as the Large White and Landrace. This breeding program aimed to improve the carcass quality and growth rates of the indigenous Polish swine.

Physically, Wielkopolskas are typically large, white pigs with long bodies and erect ears. They are characterized by their high proportion of lean meat and low backfat thickness, making them desirable for pork production. The sows are known for their excellent maternal qualities, producing large litters and being good milk producers.

The Wielkopolska breed is well-adapted to various climatic conditions and is known for its resilience. They are raised primarily for meat production and are a significant part of the Polish pig industry. While not as widely known internationally as some other European pig breeds, the Wielkopolska holds an important place in Polish agriculture.
