Whitetipped

Whitetipped is a term that can refer to several different species of sharks, most commonly associated with the Whitetip Reef Shark (Triaenodon obesus) and the oceanic Whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus). These sharks are distinguished by the characteristic white or pale tip on their dorsal fin and often on the tips of other fins.

The Whitetip Reef Shark is a slender shark found in tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. It is a relatively small species, typically reaching lengths of up to 2.1 meters (7 feet). They are often observed resting on the seafloor or among coral reefs, and are known for their nocturnal activity. Their diet consists mainly of fish and crustaceans.

The oceanic Whitetip shark is a larger species, capable of growing over 3 meters (10 feet) long. Historically, it was one of the most abundant pelagic sharks in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. This species is known for its long, wing-like pectoral fins and often has white tips on its fins. They are opportunistic predators, feeding on a variety of fish and squid. Due to overfishing and finning, the oceanic Whitetip shark is now considered critically endangered in many parts of its range.

The presence of a white tip on a shark's fin is a common evolutionary trait that aids in camouflage or signaling, though its exact function can vary between species. Both species are generally not considered aggressive towards humans, but caution is always advised when encountering any wild marine life.
