Weightcutting

Weightcutting is the practice of rapidly losing body weight in the days or hours leading up to a weigh-in for a combat sport or other weight-class-limited competition. Athletes undertake this to compete in a lower weight class than their usual body mass, potentially offering a size and strength advantage over opponents who may not have cut weight.

Common methods include extreme fluid restriction, saunas, steam rooms, exercise in heavy clothing, diuretic use, and dietary manipulation. These methods aim to reduce water and glycogen stores, which constitute a significant portion of body weight. The goal is to lose several pounds quickly, with the intention of rehydrating and replenishing glycogen stores before the actual competition.

While weightcutting is prevalent, it carries significant health risks. Severe dehydration can lead to electrolyte imbalances, kidney strain, heatstroke, and impaired cognitive function. It can also negatively impact athletic performance due to reduced energy reserves and compromised physiological function. Many sports organizations have implemented stricter weigh-in procedures and longer periods between weigh-ins and competition to mitigate the dangers associated with aggressive weightcutting. Some federations have also introduced multiple weigh-ins throughout a training camp or tournament to discourage extreme measures. The debate continues regarding the efficacy and safety of weightcutting practices in various sports.
