Weddell

Weddell refers to a genus of seals, *Leptonychotes*, commonly known as Weddell seals. These marine mammals are found in the Antarctic, inhabiting the waters and ice floes of the Southern Ocean. They are the southernmost-dwelling of all seals.

Weddell seals are characterized by their large size, robust build, and relatively short snout. Adults typically weigh between 300 to 400 kilograms (660 to 880 pounds) and measure about 2 to 3 meters (6.6 to 9.8 feet) in length. Their fur is usually dark gray or brown with lighter spots, providing camouflage against the icy environment.

These seals are known for their remarkable diving abilities. They can descend to depths of over 600 meters and remain submerged for up to 80 minutes, a skill crucial for hunting fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods in the deep Antarctic waters. Weddell seals are also known to maintain breathing holes in the sea ice, which they use for access to the water and as escape routes.

Reproduction typically occurs on the sea ice. Females give birth to a single pup, which is nursed for about seven to nine weeks. Weddell seals are generally solitary animals but may gather in small groups, especially around breathing holes. Their lifespan can exceed 20 years in the wild. They are considered an important part of the Antarctic ecosystem.
