Weaverbirds

Weaverbirds are a diverse group of small to medium-sized passerine birds in the family Ploceidae, commonly referred to as weaverbirds or old world weavers. They are primarily native to Africa, with several species extending into the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, such as the baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus). The group includes many genera, notably Ploceus and Quelea, and comprises a range of sizes and plumages.

Nesting and reproduction: Weaverbirds are renowned for their nest-building. Males construct elaborate woven nests from grasses and plant fibers, often in colonies in reeds, shrubs, or on human structures. The nests are typically pendulous or cup-shaped with a woven entrance near the base, and nest quality is a major factor in female mate choice. Breeding commonly occurs in colonies, with synchronized construction and fledging.

Behavior and diet: They are generally social, foraging in flocks that may feed around grain crops or other seeds. Their diet consists mainly of seeds and grains, supplemented by insects, especially during the breeding season. Plumage often shows strong sexual dimorphism, with bright coloration in many males, while females tend to be more drab.

Conservation: Many species are widespread and common, but some populations are threatened by habitat loss, agricultural changes, or other regional pressures. The red-billed quelea (Quelea quelea) is among the most abundant birds globally and can be a significant agricultural pest in parts of Africa.
