Waterglycol

Waterglycol refers to aqueous solutions of glycol compounds, most commonly ethylene glycol or propylene glycol, used as coolants and antifreeze in heating, ventilation, and industrial cooling systems. These mixtures are miscible with water and are chosen to extend the usable temperature range of a system beyond that of water alone.

Two primary types are used in industry. Ethylene glycol–water blends provide strong freeze protection and high boiling-point elevation but are toxic to humans and animals, requiring careful handling and containment. Propylene glycol–water blends offer improved safety and are often used in food, pharmaceutical, and consumer applications, though they remain hazardous if ingested. Both types alter several properties of water: they depress the freezing point, raise the boiling point, and generally increase viscosity while slightly reducing thermal conductivity. To protect metal surfaces and prolong system life, corrosion inhibitors and stabilizers are commonly added.

Applications include automotive cooling systems, building HVAC and solar thermal loops, industrial process cooling, and refrigeration systems. In all cases, the exact glycol concentration is selected to achieve the desired temperature range and compatibility with materials in the loop. Regular monitoring of glycol concentration, pH, and inhibitor levels is required to maintain performance and prevent corrosion or microbial growth.

Safety and environmental considerations are important. Ethylene glycol is highly toxic if ingested; propylene glycol is less toxic but still hazardous. Spills should be contained and disposed of according to local regulations. When selecting a waterglycol blend, factors to consider include operating temperature, system materials, safety requirements, and environmental impact.
