Warenlagers

Warenlager is a German term for a storage facility used to hold goods before they are distributed or used in production. It can refer to a physical building or to the storage function within a supply chain. Warehouses may be privately owned by manufacturers or retailers or operated as public or contract facilities by third‑party logistics providers.

The primary functions of a Warenlager include receiving goods, putting them away in designated storage locations, maintaining inventory records, picking items for orders, packing, and preparing shipments. Modern warehouses often employ systematic layouts, such as pallet racking or shelving, and use technology such as warehouse management systems (WMS), barcode or RFID tracking, and sometimes automated storage and retrieval systems to improve accuracy and efficiency.

Types of Warenlager vary by purpose and throughput. General warehouses provide long‑term storage, while distribution centers are designed for high turnover and rapid throughput. Cold‑storage warehouses handle perishable products requiring temperature control. Bonded or customs warehouses store goods under customs supervision, and automated warehouses use robotics and automation to enhance performance. Cross‑docking facilities move incoming goods directly to outbound transport with minimal storage time.

Management and safety are important considerations. Compliance with relevant regulations, proper handling of hazardous materials, and environmental controls for temperature, humidity, or ventilation are common requirements. Efficient warehousing supports inventory accuracy, reduces handling costs, and enables timely delivery, contributing to the overall efficiency of supply chains.
