Vöötkudumist

Vöötkudumist, also known as tablet weaving or card weaving, is an ancient form of weaving that uses small, flat tablets or cards with holes in them to guide the warp threads. These cards are turned in a specific sequence, which causes the warp threads to twist together, forming a pattern. This method allows for the creation of intricate designs, often with geometric or figurative motifs.

The origins of vöötkudumist can be traced back thousands of years, with evidence found in ancient Egypt, Scandinavia, and other parts of the world. Historically, it was used to produce decorative bands, trim for clothing, and straps for various purposes. The width of the woven band is determined by the number of warp threads used, with each card controlling a set of threads.

The process involves threading warp yarns through the holes of the cards. The cards are then arranged in a desired order, and the weaver turns them in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction, or in combinations of turns. This turning action creates a shed, through which the weft thread is passed to interlace with the warp. Different turning sequences result in different patterns and textures.

Modern vöötkudumist is practiced by textile artists and craftspeople for both historical reenactment and contemporary design. It is a versatile technique that can produce a wide range of fabric types, from dense, tape-like bands to more flexible and complex woven structures. The simplicity of the tools, the cards themselves, allows for portability and accessibility for weavers.
