Võnkumiste, often translated as oscillations or vibrations, refers to a repetitive fluctuation in time around a central equilibrium point. This phenomenon is fundamental in physics and engineering, describing the motion of many natural and artificial systems. The simplest form of oscillation is simple harmonic motion, characterized by a sinusoidal variation in position, velocity, and acceleration. Key parameters associated with oscillations include amplitude, which is the maximum displacement from equilibrium, and frequency, the number of oscillations per unit time. The period is the time taken for one complete oscillation.

Oscillations can be classified into several types. Free oscillations occur when a system, once disturbed, oscillates naturally without any external driving force. Forced oscillations arise when an external periodic force is applied to the system, causing it to oscillate at the frequency of the driving force. Resonance is a special case of forced oscillation that occurs when the driving frequency matches the system's natural frequency, leading to a significant increase in amplitude. Damped oscillations occur when energy is gradually lost from the oscillating system, usually due to friction or resistance, causing the amplitude to decrease over time.
