Vízfeltöltődés is a Hungarian term that translates to "water replenishment" or "recharge" in English. It refers to the process by which groundwater aquifers are naturally or artificially supplied with water. This replenishment is crucial for maintaining sustainable water resources, as it replenishes the water that is withdrawn through natural processes like rainfall infiltration or human activities such as pumping.

Natural water replenishment primarily occurs through precipitation. Rainwater and melted snow seep into the ground, percolating through soil and rock layers until they reach the water table, thus recharging the aquifer. The rate of natural recharge is influenced by factors like rainfall intensity, soil permeability, and the presence of vegetation.

Artificial water replenishment, also known as managed aquifer recharge (MAR), involves human intervention to increase groundwater levels. This can be achieved through various methods, including spreading basins where water is allowed to infiltrate from the surface, injection wells that directly pump water into the aquifer, or by using existing surface water bodies like rivers and lakes for infiltration. MAR is often employed in areas experiencing groundwater depletion or to improve water quality by filtering out contaminants.

Understanding and managing water replenishment processes are vital for water resource management. It helps ensure a consistent supply of water for drinking, agriculture, and industry, and prevents land subsidence or saltwater intrusion into freshwater aquifers.
