Värijuhtimine, often translated as color management, is a set of tools and processes used to ensure that colors are reproduced consistently across different devices and media. The primary goal of värijuhtimine is to achieve predictable and accurate color representation, whether you are viewing an image on a screen, printing it, or displaying it on another device. Without proper värijuhtimine, the colors on your monitor might appear different from the colors in a printed photograph, or on a website viewed on a different computer.

The fundamental principle behind värijuhtimine involves understanding and controlling the color characteristics of each device in a workflow. This is typically achieved through device profiling. A device profile, often in the International Color Consortium (ICC) format, describes the unique color behavior of a specific device, such as a monitor, scanner, or printer. These profiles act as a common language that allows different devices to communicate their color capabilities and limitations.

Key components of a värijuhtimine system include color spaces, profiles, and rendering intents. Color spaces, like sRGB or Adobe RGB, define a range of colors that can be represented. Profiles, as mentioned, characterize individual devices. Rendering intents determine how out-of-gamut colors (colors that a device cannot reproduce) are handled when translating from one color space to another. Common rendering intents include perceptual, relative colorimetric, absolute colorimetric, and saturation.
