Vältimiskäitumiste, often translated as avoidance behavior, refers to a pattern of actions taken to evade or escape from a situation, stimulus, or feeling that is perceived as aversive or threatening. This behavior can manifest in various contexts, including social interactions, phobias, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse. The core of avoidance is the desire to prevent or reduce uncomfortable internal states such as fear, anxiety, sadness, or shame, or to sidestep external triggers that might evoke these feelings.
While avoidance can provide temporary relief from distress, it often perpetuates the problem in the long run.
The concept of vältimiskäitumiste is central to many therapeutic approaches, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Therapists
