Vuorijäätiköillä, known in English as mountain glaciers or alpine glaciers, are glaciers that are confined to a mountain valley. They are distinct from ice sheets, which are continental-scale masses of ice that cover vast areas. Mountain glaciers form at high altitudes where temperatures are low enough for snow to accumulate and compact into ice over many years. These glaciers are typically found in mountain ranges around the world, including the Alps, Himalayas, Andes, and Rockies.

The formation process begins with snowfall that accumulates in sheltered areas. As more snow falls, the weight of the overlying layers compresses the older snow, transforming it into firn and eventually dense glacial ice. Gravity then causes the ice mass to flow downhill, carving out the characteristic U-shaped valleys associated with glacial erosion. The rate of flow depends on factors such as the glacier's size, slope, and temperature.

Mountain glaciers play a crucial role in the hydrology of many regions. They act as natural reservoirs, storing water in the form of ice and releasing it gradually as meltwater during warmer months. This meltwater is a vital source of fresh water for downstream communities, agriculture, and ecosystems, particularly in arid or semi-arid areas. The presence of mountain glaciers can also influence local climate and weather patterns.

However, mountain glaciers are highly sensitive to climate change. Rising global temperatures are causing many of these glaciers to retreat at an accelerated rate. This retreat has significant implications, including reduced water availability, increased risk of glacial lake outburst floods, and impacts on biodiversity. Monitoring the behavior of mountain glaciers is therefore an important aspect of understanding and responding to climate change.
