Vuorautusta is a Finnish term that generally translates to "rock polishing" or "rock smoothing." It refers to a natural process where rocks, particularly along coastlines or riverbeds, are gradually worn down and made smoother by the abrasive action of water, sand, and other debris. This erosion typically occurs over extended periods, with the constant movement of water and the friction of sediment against the rock surface gradually removing imperfections and creating rounded or polished shapes.

The phenomenon of vuorautusta is most commonly observed in areas with strong currents or significant wave action. Coastal rocks that are frequently exposed to the sea are prime examples, as are stones found in fast-flowing rivers or glacial meltwater streams. The type of rock also plays a role; softer rocks will be shaped more quickly than harder ones.
