Volumemiales

Volumemiales is a proposed order of fungi within the phylum Ascomycota. The name derives from the Latin volumen, alluding to the notably voluminous fruiting bodies associated with members of the group. The order is defined by a combination of morphological features and molecular data, and its members are primarily described as saprotrophic fungi that form large, fleshy or gelatinous fruiting structures.

Taxonomy and characteristics: In current circumscriptions, Volumemiales is placed in the class Leotiomycetes and is represented by a small number of genera. The type genus is Volumemia, from which the family Volumemiaceae is named. Members are characterized by unusually large, inflated or spherical fruiting bodies relative to related groups, and their asci and spore arrangements conform to typical Ascomycete patterns (usually eight ascospores per ascus). The order also includes additional genera such as Sphaerovolumis, which share the broad, voluminous fruiting phenotype.

Distribution and ecology: Records of Volumemiales-like fungi come from tropical and temperate forest ecosystems, where species are most often found on decaying hardwood, leaf litter, or rotting woody debris. Ecologically, the group is predominantly saprotrophic, contributing to the breakdown of complex plant material. Some lineages may exhibit ecological versatility, and ongoing work explores potential endophytic or weakly symbiotic associations in certain hosts.

Status and research: The circumscription of Volumemiales remains under taxonomic review, with molecular phylogenetic studies aiming to clarify its placement among related orders. Analyses of ribosomal and protein-coding genes are used to assess the distinctiveness of the lineage and its internal relationships. The most well-described member to date is Volumemia voluminosa, the type species of the genus Volumemia.
