Volatiilsus

Volatiilsus is a theoretical construct used to describe a system's susceptibility to rapid state changes in response to perturbations. It is intended to capture a broader sense of volatility than conventional metrics, spanning physical, chemical, ecological, and economic domains.

In practice, volatiilsus refers to the propensity of a system to transition between qualitatively different states when subjected to small disturbances. A system with high volatiilsus can exhibit abrupt shifts, while a low volatiilsus implies greater resilience or stability. The concept emphasizes dynamic behavior over static properties, focusing on how state variables respond under perturbation.

There is no universal measurement for volatiilsus. Approaches include analyzing the response amplitude to standardized perturbations, the time required to reach a new attractor, or the frequency and nature of bifurcations in a model. Researchers may use perturbation experiments or dynamical simulations, often normalizing by system size or energy scale to enable cross-context comparisons.

Applications of volatiilsus appear in multiple fields. In chemistry, it can describe bistable reaction networks; in ecology, it relates to oscillations and regime shifts in populations; in finance, it is used to discuss regime-switching in asset prices; in engineering, it informs the design of control systems subjected to noise and disturbances.

The term derives from volatility with a suffix suggesting a property or condition.
