Villakerroksia, often translated as "wool layers" or "woolen layers" in English, refers to the practice of layering clothing made from wool to achieve warmth and comfort. This method is particularly effective due to wool's inherent insulating properties, its ability to wick away moisture, and its warmth even when damp.

The concept of layering involves wearing multiple thin garments rather than a single thick one. Each layer serves a specific purpose. The innermost layer, typically a base layer, is designed to draw moisture away from the skin. Wool is an excellent choice for this layer as it can absorb a significant amount of moisture vapor without feeling clammy. The middle layer, or insulating layer, traps body heat. Multiple thin wool sweaters or fleeces can be used here, allowing for adjustment based on temperature. The outermost layer, or shell layer, protects against wind and precipitation. While not always wool, a windproof and water-resistant outer layer complements the woolen layers beneath.

This layering system allows for adaptability in changing weather conditions. As activity levels increase or temperatures rise, one can remove outer layers to prevent overheating and sweat buildup. Conversely, in colder conditions, additional wool layers can be added. The air trapped between the layers also acts as an insulator, enhancing warmth.
