In practice, a viitekohdan is a location with precisely defined coordinates or a defined position within a coordinate system, chosen to be stable and well characterized so that other measurements or datasets can be linked to it reliably.

Common applications include surveying and geodesy, where a viitekohdan anchors a local datum to a global geodetic frame; georeferencing of maps and aerial imagery; and computer vision or photogrammetry, where anchor points are used to calibrate cameras and transform image coordinates to real-world coordinates. In construction and civil engineering, a known reference point ensures that measurements conform to design plans. In datasets and GIS, a viitekohdan can also serve as the origin of a local coordinate system or as a control point for accuracy assessment.
